Why join the RGVBA?

The RGVBA exists to create, develop and foster strategic partnerships that help churches fulfill God’s mission in their context. The RGVBA will accomplish this by:

  • Facilitating opportunities for churches to partner together in mission.
  • Generating leadership development and educational opportunities for leaders in congregations.
  • Provide connections for the discovery of resources that foster church health.
  • Foster partnerships that result in community ministries and missions mobilization.

In short, we believe God can do more through us together than separately.

What are the membership qualifications?

  • Churches shall be regularly constituted, independent bodies organized on generally accepted principles common to Southern Baptists.
  • The policy of church government for each church shall be congregational.
  • The pastors of member churches shall preach and their congregations endorse such doctrines generally believed by Southern Baptists to be taught in the Bible.
  • Each church shall cooperate in the fellowship and purpose of the Association and shall contribute regularly to the financial support of the Association by giving at least $250.00 per year in undersigned donations to the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association.
  • Each church shall be a member of only one local association, the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association.

How are churches received into fellowship?

New churches are recommended to be admitted during the RGVBA’s annual meeting (last week of October). Recommendation must be carried by a 75% majority roll call vote of the messengers present.

Any new church desiring representation in the Association shall be at least one year old at the time of the Annual Meeting of the Association. Application shall be made at least sixty (60) days before the Annual Meeting of the Association through a petitionary letter stating:

  • The manner by which the church was constituted.
  • That the church has adopted the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message.
  • That the church is contributing to the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association, the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and/or the Southern Baptist Convention through the Cooperative Program.

A mission that has become a church must have been constituted a church at least thirty (30) days prior to the Annual Meeting of the Association and application shall be made at least thirty (30) days prior to the Annual Meeting of the Association through a petitionary letter

The petitionary letter is a formal request from the church that records the information of the church and certifies that the membership of the church have agreed to pursue membership in the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association, agree with the doctrinal statement of the association, and desire to collaborate with the member churches of the association. The membership application is required for churches seeking to associate with the RGV Baptist Association. [Application]

The church constitution and bylaws are important documents that establish and confirm the church’s identity and purpose. In a 501(c)3 incorporated nonprofit organization, a constitution is a legal document that establishes the church’s legal compliance and provides guidance for church governance and declares the church’s statement of faith. Membership requires a copy of the candidate church’s constitution to ensure that the church is acceptable for acceptance into the fellowship of the member churches of the association. A doctrinal statement of faith is required as part of an application for membership with the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association.
